Becoming a Plumber

Plumbing is much more complicated now than it was in the past, and as a result, you will need to make sure you obtain some type of degree before you actually pursue the field. Of course, you could try to jump in headfirst and simply hang your sign, but will people call you? The first thing you will need to do is choose a school, and there are plenty of schools right now that offer a decent plumbing degree. Something to note is that many plumbing schools will require a student to learn a number of different skills such as industrial pipe fitting and sprinkler fitting. There is much more to plumbing than basic pipe work these days, and this is something that you will need to be prepared for!

During your schooling, you will need to take on an apprenticeship, which is the equivalent of taking a low paying job. Remember that an apprenticeship is most definitely not an easy undertaking. It is a paid position in most cases, but it is not a job that you will want to stick with. You will essentially be following a certified plumber around, learning how he or she does the job, and even helping with certain tasks. All of this will be done with the hope that you will someday learn to do the job on your own.

If you stick with it for long enough, you will earn a degree, and eventually you will obtain a license for your state. Before you rush into anything however, you need to know what plumbers do. They are not your typical nine to five worker, especially if they wish to get their business off the ground. Then again, you may not choose to start your own business, but rather work for an already established plumbing agency. Either way, you may very well find yourself on call twenty-four hours per day, and this is something that you need to be prepared for.

What you can count on however is the repair of some rather common problems. For instance, you may have to repair a broken toilet, and in some cases, you might find that you need to repair a broken dishwasher. This may seem a bit outside of the job description, but dishwashers are a fixture in the home, and they are very much a part of the plumbing system.
