Do I Have Polybutylene Pipe?
Polybutylene Pipe Replacement
There is most frequently below ground polybutylene pipe – also referred to as “water service pipe” or “yard service pipe” or “poly pipe.” It is the pipe that carries water from the road into the home that is used in and about homes in the Baltimore, MD area. There is also some polybutylene pipe used inside the home plumbing system, but it is not frequently used in the Baltimore area.
Polybutylene pipe is a blue (or gray) synthetic pipe manufactured by the Shell Oil Corporation. It was installed in homes from just about 1978 and 1995 – mostly in new building– but it was also used to replace water services in older homes as well. It was learned that chlorine added to sanitize our drinking water reacts chemically with the polybutylene turning it brittle. All polybutylene pipe will fail because of this. It is just a question of when it will happen… not if it will. I typically see an increase in polybutylene pipe replacement when the seasons change. The ground changes temperature and so does our drinking water. The change in temperature causes the polybutylene pipe to expand or contract aggravating its weakness.

There are several advantages to being proactive about polybutylene pipe replacement…
- It protects your most important investment… your home.
- If a fail occurs in the foundation wall, or near it, you could have water damage which could include property damage i.e. carpets, furniture, walls, even AC and heating equipment.
- Additionally the new asbestos of our time is mold. Water not properly removed can lead to mold growing in your walls and under your carpets. The spores get into your duct work system and are distributed around the home causing health risks.
- A break outside the house can cause soil to be washed away from under sidewalks and driveways causing them to break or even give way.
- Most homes being sold undergo a home inspection. Most buyers will negotiate the replacement of the polybutylene pipe before closing on the property as they are mindful of the potential hazards of leaving the pipe in service.
- You could end up with a large water bill. I have had customers who have received water bills in surplus of $600.00 because of this pipe leaking below ground and undetected.
- Polybutylene pipe replacement that is done before a break occurs oft turns out much better appearance wise and normally costs less, too. You can plan when to do it rather than in an emergency type of repair. Five Star Plumbing Services offers discounts to customers who pre-schedule their polybutylene pipe replacement.
“First you hear a bang, then there’s a sudden drop in water pressure. Water then starts coming from pipes you didn’t know existed, causing soggy floors or holes in ceilings that are destructive and expensive to repair.”

Thanks for the information. I will have to go check and see if I have polybutylene pipe. I haven’t really thought about it much to check and see so once I get home today I am going to have to see what I can do to see what king of piping I do have for my sprinkler system as well as what I have in my house.
